International Men’s Day 2025

November 19th is International Men’s Day – an opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the wonderful men who work in our service. Andrew, Luke and Dr Gardi-Mudalige from our team share their achievements, how they feel they make a difference in their role, and what they’d like local men to know about sexual health.

Andrew, Data Validator

How do you feel you have made a difference during your time in the team?

When I worked on reception, it was nice to be a man on the desk because, for some men, they felt more comfortable talking to another man about their sexual health. Being professional but relaxed means that patients can see that we’re friendly and relaxed; it puts them at ease more.

What would you like local men to know about sexual health?

Don’t be embarrassed – there is no stigma. We’re a confidential service, all of our staff are here to help and not to judge.

Luke, Sexual Health Nurse

How do you feel you make a difference in your role?

I feel being a male clinician has really helped in certain aspects in my role. I have had multiple male patients say that I have put them at ease and made them feel comfortable and able to disclose more about their sexuality i.e. bisexual or identify as gay. This has then led myself to offer preventive treatments such as PrEP, DoxyPEP and relevant vaccinations.

What would you like local men to know about sexual health?

I would like local men to know that within our clinic we are an approachable, friendly, compassionate, non-judgemental team who are here to assist with any sexual health concerns they may have in a confidential and holistic approach.”

Dr Gardi-Mudalige, Specialty Doctor in Sexual Health

What achievement in your role are you most proud of?

I’d feel my biggest achievement is the confidence I have regarding providing excellent clinical care to my patients and supporting/helping work colleagues in their work and development.

What would you like local men to know about sexual health?

I’d like local men to be more aware of services that are available from sexual health clinics, some of which are quite specific for men at risk.
